Chapter 17

Ama left trying to figure what the Optio was doing so far from the base - meeting with politicos…especially sleezy politicos. Then she laughed to herself because she realized calling them sleezy was redundant. Her Veho arrived in minutes and whisked her back to the hotel. She had paid extra to the desk clerk for the network connection in her room. It was hardwired but the security protocols might be easy to override, she thought. She could soon be into the business of the province.

She grabbed this thing out of her bag. Alan had given Ama a MemDex. He had called it that and she hadn't known what to do with it. Alan had mentioned it was useful with computers but it was just a black rectangle about 5 centimeters square and a centimeter thick. She had thrown it in with the other do-dad surveillance equipment that her trainers: Cicero and Olivia had suggested she bring. She didn't see any connections on this MemDex thing. She was holding it in her hand and said, "What the hell am I supposed to do with this thing? I can't even attach it to a computer or anything else?"

The MemDex spoke to her and she was so startled – she dropped it onto the desk in her room. Ama. My name is Daisy and Alan gave me to you to help you out. I have scanned your room and it has one listening device in the lamp by the bed – which I disabled. You had to activate me by talking to me first. If you say, Daisy. Do this or do that… I will attempt to do that for you. What are you trying to do now with this antiquated, overly censored computer in your room?

Ama was shocked that this block of something starting talking to her. She spoke out loud back to it. "I was trying to search for information on Quintus Amulius and his associates." It was so-o-o much smaller than any of her circuit blocks in her lab that she had used in her newest robots. "I was trying to find anything I could about the upcoming rally. I was wondering why Optio Gaius from Camp Peary was way out here meeting these guys?"

"Hmm," Daisy said. "You were trying to find that out on this piece of junk, public hotel computer on a shared network closely monitored by the government? Whew. Glad you didn't do that. We'd have had the Gestapo here in a heartbeat."

"Gestapo?"

"Oh yeah. Different Earth. You'd have had the Praetorian Guard here beating down your door," Daisy stated.

"The government monitors what we search?" Ama was incredulous. There would be so much to search through. How could someone search through everyone's searches and messages? It would be a huge mass of data from everyone. "They don't do it where I'm from."

Daisy let out a long sigh sound. "It would be incredibly valuable data. What you like to eat? Where you go or want to go? How
